Orientation Leader Position

In August 2017 I was selected to be an orientation leader. Once I was selected, it was mandatory for me to take a leadership and professional development course to prepare me to be an orientation leader. This class taught me adequate ways to lead a group of students. This class also taught me facts about the University for me to pass forth when welcoming students and making sure they are fully informed. My job was to help incoming students, whether they were freshman or transfer students, get acclimated with campus. I did this by providing tours, helping lead programs, and making myself a resource for them. I welcomed international students as well as students from the U.S. for two weeks before school started for about forty hours a week. This experience was amazing and exhausting. I enjoyed meeting a variety of people from different cultures and being able to help them in the best way that I can. What made it exhausting was the weather at that time was very hot and we trained for long hours some days. It was a lot of hard work that went into preparing for the programs. I applied to be an orientation leader because I was just in their shoes and I had such great support when coming to the University that I wanted to pay it forward. I love helping others and sharing what I know with others. I felt that my freshman year I encountered and found a lot of resources, such as this leadership program, that I would be able to inform new students of.
